CURATORS NOTE: Contradictory accounts exist about whether his mother was Beatrice de Vascoeuil or Emma de Bellecombe, but recent scholarship leans towards the latter, who some report to have been Ranulf I's second wife but others, led by Keats-Rohan, believe was the wife of a son Ranulf II, who was in fact William's father.
